The medals awarded from the Paris 2024 Olympics are deteriorating. Athletes are getting replacements after this was discovered. The Monnaie de Paris revealed that they were doing replacements, but did not say the total number of returns. An estimated 5, 084 Olympic medals were produced for the 2024 Paris Olympics. Replacement request began as early as August of 2024. Athletes were making complaints of degraded medals and being vocal over social media. Medals do deteriorate with age, but the rate of this decline demonstrates low quality. Some have suspected that medals were produced with alloys of copper, zinc, and tin. The attempt was to make a sustainable Olympic medal. Medal production should not be concerned with environment. Athletes are not going to dispose of medals and they are not going to be stored in a junkyard. The experiment in sustainability with Olympic medals was not a success. Silver, gold, and copper should be used for Olympic medals. A recycled metal process will not produce a high quality Olympic medal.
